The wall painting, The Foldable Time: Twenty Years' Distance (2021), harks back to the wall painting, The Foldable Space (2002), which the artist created 20 years ago at Taipei Artist Village (TAV). The composition of The Foldable Time: Twenty Years' Distance references the space layout of the exhibition, Beyond the Lines, which Chen co-presented with Leyond Lin in 2002 at the conclusion of her residency at TAV. The artwork dissects the rectangular wall by the path that one must take when entering into TAV (considered the heart of TAV) into two right triangles, which visually guides people both forwards and also backwards and forms a physical pull that is both spatial and temporal. Each of the two triangles suggests the respective two-decade developmental course of the artist and TAV, including the practice opted by the artist for her residencies which “stayed close to the ground” and the residency institutes‘ external image symbols. The elements come together to form a pathway of cultural temporality and spatiality. How many 20 years can a person or an institution go through? The artist seeks to fold back time and then re-open it. The purpose behind this gesture is not just about revisiting the past but also about looking forward to the future, while also expressing a sense of anticipation for the next 20 years. Indicated at the topmost part of the wall painting are gauges of time suggested by (political) colors, which may play a critical part in determining the direction in the next two decades.
牆面壁畫《可折疊的時間：二十年的距離》（2021）回應藝術家二十年前在藝術村創作的牆面壁畫《可折疊的空間》（2002），挪用藝術家當年駐村成果展《線裡線外：陳曉朋、林一中雙人展》（2002）的展場空間配置為畫面結構，將走入藝術村必經通道（藝術村心臟位置）的長方形牆面對切為兩個直角三角形，視覺上引人向前也向後，形成一種物理性時間和空間的拉力。兩個三角形裡面分別置放提示二十年來藝術家和藝術村的成長路徑，包含「貼近地面」的駐村實踐與對外形象的象徵符號，同時成為一種文化性時間和空間的通道。一個人或一個單位能有多少二十年呢？作者試圖把時間折回去，再打開來，這個動作的意義不只在於回顧過去，也期待未來，亦即對於下一個二十年的期待。而牆面壁畫最上方，由（政治）色彩所暗示的時間長度刻度，或許就是決定未來二十年方向的關鍵？
